Massage is often a recommended form of alternative therapy that many doctors believe can be beneficial in improving the health and overall well being of a chronic fatigue patient. The most popular forms of massage for CFS sufferers are myofascial therapy and craniosacral therapy which both are types of massage done to the face, neck and upper back region.
However a complete body massage can still be beneficial to promote the relaxation of the muscles and nerves. This is the number one purpose of massage therapy, which is to relax, calm and help soothe the body, especially when it is under stress such as when the severe symptoms of CFS flare up.
Massage is a form of natural healing that helps to release stress and strain from the muscles and indeed help the body to become more relaxed and stress free. Pain in the neck, shoulders and back as well as headaches and stiffness in the muscles is brought on by the many symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Keep in mind that some patients suffer more symptoms of CFS than others. Stretching and a soak in the bathtub can bring a certain amount of temporary relief but the very best thing to help the affected area is a relaxing massage.
Deep Tissue Massages
Deep tissue massage is a one form of a massage that puts emphasis on the deeper layers of the muscle tissue as opposed to the top layers of the muscle. The goal of deep tissue massage is to release the tension that has built up which often has escalated into a chronic health problem.
Some CFS sufferers prefer a relaxing massage while others do enjoy the benefits of a deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massage uses deep finger pressure and slow strokes on the contracted and areas of the body and it does so by either “following or going across the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia.”
This massage technique releases muscle tension by way of both slow strokes and friction that takes place not with the grain of the muscles but across the grain. Deep tissue massage is especially effective for those who scar tissue from an accident or injury. Deep tissue massage serves to break up as well as do away with existing scar tissue.
A deep tissue massage differentiates from a relaxing massage because its central goal is to decrease the amount of pain and stiffness that is present in muscles that are already very sensitive, irritated and inflamed. A relaxing massage is aimed at doing just that, relaxing the body. However it does not address muscles that are already painful or injured.
Some people report experiencing a small amount of pain in their muscles either during a deep tissue massage or directly afterwards. This is not a cause for alarm if it happens to you. It should take only a day or two to start feeling better than you did before you had the massage in the first place.
Massage therapy helps to release the pent up tension in the muscles and thereby getting rid of the toxins that are in the muscles. This allows oxygen and blood to circulate freely throughout the body as they are supposed to do. Due to the fact that toxins are released during any kind of massage it is strongly suggested that the person receiving the massage drink a couple of glasses of water afterwards to help flush the toxins out of the body.
