What Foods to Avoid if You Have Gout

Knowing what foods to avoid if you have gout may mean the difference between a lifetime of suffering and a relatively pain-free existence. Dietary considerations are only one part of this type of arthritis pain relief treatment, but many doctors consider it important.

Although gout is a hereditary disease characterized by the bodys inability to properly process uric acid (a waste product produced during the metabolism of food), you can maintain a degree of control over the disease by simply watching what you eat.


People plagued by gout should avoid foods high in a substance called “purine.” Purine, an organic compound found naturally in the body and in many foods, becomes metabolized by certain enzymes into uric acid. When the kidneys do not eliminate enough uric acid by their normal function or if the uric acid does not break down enough in the bloodstream for the kidneys to do so, crystals form. These uric acid crystals then settle in the tiny sacs of fluid in the joints of the body. The sharp, knife-like characteristics of these crystals cause severe joint pain.

Therefore, it stands to reason that by avoiding foods containing high levels of purine and subsequently, the overabundance of resulting uric acid, the propensity to develop gout is lowered.

Experts vary in their recommendations regarding purine sources with some advising a low-protein diet in general. These low-protein diet advocates recommend women consume no more than 50 grams of protein a day, and men no more than 63 grams. Other professionals advise allowing protein-rich foods but eliminating those high in purine from the following foods:

    Shellfish (shrimp, mussels, clams)
    Other fish (sardines, anchovies, herring)
    Organ meats (brains, liver, tongue, kidneys)
    Legumes (beans, peas, lentils)

Alcohol avoidance plays another part of good anti-gout arthritis relief. When people drink alcoholic beverages, the kidneys go into overdrive in an attempt to eliminate the alcohol from the body. This causes dehydration, which, in turn, kicks in the bodys production of uric acid. People with gout and its accompanying problems of joint pain need to remember three words: Dont drink alcohol!

By keeping these tips in mind and by following your doctors advice on medications, gout does not have to be the focus of your existence. Think before you eat (and drink!) and soon youll be on your way to healthier, happier, gout-free life.
