16 Tips for Allergy Relief

Spring is just around the corner, and with it will come the return allergies for many. But allergies are with us year-round, unfortunately. Spring is a popular time for hay fever as trees are in pollination. During the summer when grasses and weeds are growing and pollinating they will produce an allergic reaction in many people. In the autumn you can blame your sneezing on the ever-unpopular ragweed. Typically from late March until November mold spores are releasing their reproductive cells, we call spores, which peak in late summer and early fall and can cause a lot of allergy misery. Here are some tips for relief.

1.) Traveling should be a pleasurable time and as stress-free as possible. To make sure that your allergies do not interrupt your plans make sure that you bring along a carry-on bag with your medicines inside. Bring extra medication so that if your trip is prolonged you won’t run out of allergy medications.

2.) Do not allow smoking of any tobacco products while passengers are inside your car.

3.) If you are allergic to insect stings you should avoid wearing any product that is scented, as insects are attracted to scents. Avoid wearing scented shampoos, deodorants and of course perfumes.

4.) When outdoors playing or gardening do your best to avoid wooded areas or gardens if you are allergic to any kind of pollen.

5.) Make sure that you check the weather before going outside. If the weather is hot, dry, or windy, the pollen counts will be high. On these high count weather days stay indoors.

6.) If you have asthma you may want to stay indoors as much as possible on days when there are extreme temperature changes.

7.) If you are allergic to mold, remember there are mold spores in hay, ordinary garden mulch and also in rotting autumn leaves.

8.) After a day out the allergic person should really consider taking a shower and washing their hair as well as putting the clothes in the washing machine as this is the best way to wash off any pollen that would have gathered on you and your clothes.

9.) When eating out, make sure that you chose the restaurants that are smoke-free. If you have food allergies, make sure that you speak with the chef to be sure that all of your foods are prepared without the ingredients that you are allergic to.

10.) If your allergies are moderate to severe make sure that you always carry an epinephrine injection kit or epi-pen with you at all times.

11.) Hanging clothes outside on a clothes line may make your clothes sunshine fresh but they will also collect any pollens blowing around in the breeze that is drying your clothes. When you put on these clothesline-dried clothes the pollens on them will make your symptoms appear.

12.) When you hear the pollen count for the day announced on the news or elsewhere they are stating what the measurement of the amount of pollen in the air is for that day. The most commonly announced pollen counts are for mold spores, and the three types of pollen: grasses trees, and weeds.

13.) A clean house is the allergic persons best friend. Clean your house as often as possible to rid it of any dust, animal dander, or molds that may exist inside.

14.) While traveling by car, keep your windows closed and set the air conditioner so that it will re-circulate the air. This way the pollen stays outside the vehicle.

15.) Individuals are at a higher risk for allergic rhinitis and other allergies if both of your parents have an allergy or you are exposed to dust mites, animal dander, or other indoors allergens or if you are exposed to pollens or molds. The exposure to these things is pretty common in today’s world.

16.) To further keep pollens out of your home while running the air conditioner, you can use cheesecloth to cover the air conditioning vents to filter out pollens. Make sure that you are choosing high efficiency particulate air filters. You also need to clean the air filters frequently and the air ducts at least once every year.
